uMhlanga Masjid donates water to those in need

RECOGNISING the needs of the community, the uMhlanga Masjid donated thousands of litres of water to residents in need in the aftermath of the devastating KZN floods.

Many residents within the north Durban community were left without water for days on end after the floods resulted in major damage to the Umgeni Water infrastructure.

While the eThekwini Municipality has since introduced water rationing to some areas as of last week, members of the Umhlanga Islamic Society have been doing their bit for communities in need.

Moulana Mohammed Vanker, a member of the society said they helped deliver water to residents living in Verulam, Amaoti and oThongati who were left without any water after the storms.

The mosque, situated on Bruton Close in Somerset Park also opened its doors to residents in the area who were also left without water.

“The person who spearheaded this drive or initiative was Mukhtar Dawood. I think we all recognised the need especially as many of us live in areas affected by the lack of water supply. I live in uMhlanga and I know people were desperately looking for water for a number of days but so many of the shops were sold out. We invited residents to come and collect water from the mosque. We had bottled water as well as municipal water from JoJo tanks. In fact we are still delivering water to the outlying areas who despite the rationing in place are still without water,” he said.

Vanker said they would continue their outreach initiative until the bulk water supply was restored.
