Glen Anil resident crowned KZN champ

David Williams will now compete at the National Para Surfing Championships which take place in Durban in May.

IT was a moment to savour for Glen Anil resident, David Williams as he clinched his second consecutive provincial title at this year’s KZN Para Surfing Championships at Addington Beach.

Williams, who competes in the kneel division, also helped out as beach announcer at the championships.

The 34-year-old’s attention now shifts to the National Para Surfing Championships which also take place in Durban in May.

“I was super stoked about winning of course. It’s always such an honour to be involved in any surfing competition. The attention now is SA nationals. That’s the one where the pressure lies for me. The likes of Deryck and Tyler Pike at the competition is what keeps me pushing to be better.

“I have the world of respec for them as they have been in this game a lot longer than me, they bring wisdom and skill, and every time I am lucky enough to share the ocean with them I learn something new and grow,” he said.

Williams also praised his fellow competitors at the champs who competed in the various divisions, including stand, kneel, sit, prone and blind and visually impaired to name a few.

“Watching all of the other athletes is inspiring in itself for those taking part as well as those who come to support. The bravery and commitment of the athletes is one of those words can not describe, I highly recommend anyone to come to one of the events and try not leave a different person,” Williams enthused.

The competition was made possible by Made for More, a non-profit company (NPC) and a public benefit organisation (PBO) that aims to include, empower and equip people with disabilities through sport and mental health programmes.
