Shots fired in attempted cash-in-transit robbery on Chris Hani Road

The scene was cordoned off and handed over to Greenwood Park SAPS.

AN attempted robbery of a cash-in-transit vehicle on Chris Hani Road (North Coast Road) was foiled after a shootout between armed security guard and the suspects on Tuesday morning.

One person, believed to be a G4S guard, was injured by glass pieces after a bullet hit a window of the armoured vehicle.

Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst, said the security officer was transported through to hospital.

“Reports indicate that the vehicle came under fire. Paramedics assessed the scene and found that one of the occupants from the vehicle had sustained injuries from glass shrapnel. They were transported to a local hospital,” Herbst said.

Marshall Security spokesperson, Tyron Powell said various rescue and emergency personnel responded to the incident at around 10:45.

“Multiple armed response officers and our Special Operation Team (SOT) members were dispatched the scene within minutes. It was established that security from a cash-in-transit company were involved in a shootout with an unknown amount of suspects. The armed suspects fled prior to our arrival and several cartridges from high caliber rifles were found at the scene. The scene was secured and handed over to the Greenwood Park SAPS,” Powell said.

Provincial SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala confirmed the incident had occurred.

“Security guards were collecting money from an ATM at a business premises on Old North Coast Road when they were confronted by two armed men. A shootout ensued and the suspects fled the scene on foot. Nothing was taken and no injuries reported. A case of attempted cash in transit robbery will be opened at Greenwood park police station,” she said.
