Durban North endurance swimmer needs your help

Sarah Ferguson has swum more than 520km of her One Ocean Swim environmental swim.

DURBAN North endurance swimmer, Sarah Ferguson, has now covered more than 520km of her epic swim for the environment.

Speaking to Northglen News from Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape, Ferguson said that she needed the support of South Africans to complete the next leg of her One Ocean Swim to raise public awareness around plastic pollution.

Ferguson set off on her 1 500km swim along the coast from Durban to Cape Town on February 21 and aims to complete the next leg of her swim to Mossel Bay by May this year.

“This swim is primarily about creating awareness on plastic pollution and changing how our behaviour can make a difference. It is also about highlighting the incredible coastline we have and how important it is to protect it now more than ever. Logistically this journey has been super challenging. The team and I have given everything, mentally, physically and emotionally to get to the Eastern Cape.

“Many of them have even put their careers on hold to complete this journey. Against all those odds we’ve made it this far. We’ve done this on the support of the public for which we are super grateful and we are hoping South Africans will get behind us for the next leg of the journey as every cent counts,” she said.

Now that Ferguson and her team have hit colder currents, she plans on swimming to Mossel Bay by the end of May and restarting in December this year to swim the final leg to Cape Town.

“That has been driven by the seasonal change. We are also closing in on the breeding season of the Great White Sharks and the start of the sardine run so that’s why we aim to restart in December this year. We’ve already seen a few bait balls on the swim,” she said.

In total, Ferguson has swum more than 520km, averaging 26km a day.

She encouraged residents to follow her journey through her Instagram and Facebook pages, One Ocean Swim. She has also set-up a BackaBuddy page to fund the swim.
