#HAPPYDAY: A sprinkling of the simple things is what brings joy to each day

Caxton Local Media Group Editor, Corrinne Louw chats about what brings the most happiness to her life on World Happiness Day taking place today.

THEY say the best things in life are free. In commemoration of World Happiness Day which is celebrated today, March 20, I share my top four best in life’s, that happen to be free.

My Asics running shoes

Well not exactly free, they cost a pretty penny, but boy was that penny worth it. I saved for over a year to buy my Asics running shoes. Now before you think I am being shallow by placing so much emphasis on material things, my obvious joy givers are my children, the family followed closely by my sleep. My Asics bring me such joy not only because they look good with almost anything but because they cushion my training grind. I dress them up, I dress them down, I sweat them out and still, they look good.

My avocado tree

Now for the truly free stuff – my avocado tree currently bearing fruit like nobody’s business. Since avocados cost an arm and leg I am thrilled to be able to simply pop into my back yard, pluck an avo, and enjoy.

Durban promenade

In third place is the Durban promenade, always a pleasure. It sits perfectly next to Durban beach and on any given day is always a hit. I wake up from my free sleep, run there wearing my Asics, then head home and enjoy an avocado from my burgeoning avocado tree.

My frizzy hair

Realising that my frizzy hair is a joy rather than a pain is what is making me happy. For years my frizzy hair was a problem, but now (like most things in life) that I am embracing it, it brings me great joy.

World Happiness Day was proclaimed by the United Nations in July 2012, to remind member countries that happiness and well-being are universal goals and aspirations that should be recognised in public policy objectives.
