A 21-YEAR-OLD psychology student was recently announced as a NIVEA 2022 Top 10 Skinfluencer competition.

Khwezi Mkhize who hails from Mount Edgecombe said, at first, she was scared when she first got news that she had made it to the top 50 in the competition.

“A friend of mine had reminded me about the NIVEA 2022 Top 10 Skinfluencer. I had entered before, but was never chosen,” she said.

Mkhize, who is a full time psychology student at UKZN Pietermaritzburg, thought it would be a good idea to enter as she had documented her skin transformation online.

“During lockdown, due to stress, junk food and wearing a mask, I broke out in acne. I also learnt that my hair care products had caused the breakout as well,” she said.

Prior to that Mkhize had been editing and posting content on Youtube, but those were just ‘humorous videos’ “, she said.

“I spent a lot of time online so I learnt the skill of creating content so I thought let me enter the competition again,” added Mkhize.

The challenge was to create a reel of 30 seconds describing herself.

Mkhize spoke about confidence and how she would use the platform to inspire others. She clicked on the send button in October 2021 and heard back two weeks later that she had made the top 50.

“I was so scared. I said ‘awe ma, I can’t believe it,’ I got accepted. NIVEA continued to send challenges for me to do,” she said.

The next challenge was to promote a product and explain how the key ingredient helps.

“I was then told that I was one of ten NIVEA skinfluencers and it was so liberating. I wanted to prove to myself that I can achieve what I desire,” she said.

“I also wanted to show people that a pretty face isn’t always perfect. I want to promote natural beauty and show people that skin-care is self care,” said Mkhize.
