#HAPPYDAY: I didn’t ‘carrot’ at all before I met you

To celebrate the International Day of Happiness, Caxton Newspapers staff member, Nia Louw shares the reasons why she loves her source of her happiness, her pet rabbit Clover.

PETS can add a lot to your life. No matter which type you get, they offer merriment, affection, fun, and companionship.

There are a variety of pets available, but one of the most overlooked is the noble rabbit.

Bunnies, in my opinion, are the most endearing of them all. From their teddy bear soft fur to their long ears and twitching noses, they’re the gold standard for cuteness!

This year World Happiness Day falls on Saturday, March 20, and the thing that brings me the most joy and contentment is my little furry friend named Clover.  To honour the International Day of Happiness I have compiled a list of reasons why my rabbit makes me smile and why bunnies make great pets.

He’s All Ears

Rabbits are very quiet pets, due to the fact that they’re prey animals and are constantly on high alert, they make very few sounds. This also means that my rabbit is my silent therapist, after a long day he provides me with un-interrupted venting sessions.

The fact that bunnies are so quiet is also ideal if you’re a light sleeper, rabbits are some of the most soundless pets out there, making them the perfect choice for anyone looking for peace and quiet.

He keeps me hop-timistic

Sometimes it can be difficult when you feel low to push yourself into your normal daily routine. With a bunny, getting into a routine is essential for their wellbeing. My rabbit is as demanding about his pellets and hay as he was the day before.

If I don’t feel like getting up for myself, I get up for my bunny. He is my biggest cheerleader and will be waiting happily for me in the morning. He gives me a worthwhile and important reason to get up and keep going.

He’s ear-resisitable

Rabbits have very distinct personalities. They can be charismatic, loving, and very interactive. My bun has a budding personality, he is curious, playful, and super cuddly.

When I go to the fridge for a snack he stands on his hind legs and gives me a pleading look for treats, I can never resist his adorable face. When he comes up to me at night and nuzzles up against me with the most heart-warming cuddles, I can never say no. Rabbits can easily charm their way into your heart.

I have some-bunny to love

No one will love you like your bunny. You are their whole world. I fulfill all of my Baby’s basic needs and because of this we naturally developed a very close bond. He has learned to recognise me by sight, sound, and smell and even responds to his name when I call!

It’s also not uncommon for him to follow me around the house and he will throw a tantrum if he doesn’t get his daily dose of cuddle time. He occupies a large space in my heart and the love I have for him is what brings me the most happiness.
