Blue Lagoon parkrun returns

Blue Lagoon parkrun starts at the canoe club and proceeds over the freeway bridge, through the mangroves, along Riverside and back to Blue Lagoon, adding up to 5km.

DUST off those trainers and lace up for the Blue Lagoon parkrun which is in operation once again, following a two-year break due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Sandra Byleveld, the co-event director said the parkrun only took place for a year, and then Covid-19 hit, so it was placed on hold.

“We are thrilled to be back in action and encourage walkers and runners to come and join. We are also looking for volunteers to assist at the event, to give the others a chance to step away from the volunteering duties and join the parkrun too,” she said.

Volunteers are needed to assist with duties such as time keeping, scanning barcodes, handing out tokens and to conduct race director duties.

“Each volunteer will be asked to give their time on a Saturday every two months,” said Byleveld.

“You can earn points for volunteering as well as for participating,” she said.

The Blue Lagoon parkrun saw 56 people attend at the end of February which was their first run for 2022.
Last week 39 people showed up however, Byleveld said she was hoping the numbers will increase.

“The maximum each event can take is 350 runners and walkers. During the first year, we saw approximately 180 people per event,” she said.

“It is free to join and a really great way to keep fit while enjoying the scenic route,” she said.

Anyone can join, however children under the age of 11 must be accompanied by adult.

“We can’t allow prams and dogs because the path entails about a 1km stretch through the mangroves which is not suitable for prams and dogs,” she said.

“Athletes can also use the parkrun as training for their next big race and can get results via email. You must register online and bring your barcode to the run,” she said.
