Foundation’s goal is to clean up uMhlanga beach

The group plans to expand to other beaches in Durban and wants to get youth involved as well.

THE ACCS Ubuntu Foundation, founded in 2019, is hosting a beach clean-up starting at the lighthouse on uMhlanga Beach on March 13 at midday.

Shanice Sydney, who is employed by ACCS in uMhlanga told Northglen News she initiated the non-profit organisation as she had always been passionate about helping those in need.

The other founders are Yolen Chetty and Beverley Moodley. She and other employees of ACCS form the foundation and have ran numerous fundraising drives over the years.

“I’ve always been passionate about helping other people so I started the foundation. My colleagues and I form part of the foundation which we registered last year,” she said.

The foundation follows a programme run by the United Nations (UN) which entails working towards 17 sustainable development goals.

“We are not affiliated to the UN, but we follow this programme and want to fulfil all 17 goals,” said Sydney.

“Life below water is goal number 14. We aren’t going about it in numerical order. We decided to start in uMhlanga as we are based here and this is our way of giving back,” she said.

The clean-up would be the third goal which the ACCS Ubuntu Foundation will fulfil. The others two were eliminate poverty and hunger, and improving basic education.

“The 17 sustainable goals aren’t all that we want to fulfill as a foundation. We have done food, education and clothing drives which are ongoing. There is always a need out there,” said Sydney.

“If anyone would like to donate clothing and non-perishable items, they are welcome to. We are also looking for volunteers to join the beach clean-up.

They must bring their own bin bags and gloves,” she said. For more information call 087 654 9884.
