Sunningdale resident inspired to clean up

Phume Ngongoma cleaned up a small section of Sugarfarm Trail in order to help out and give back to her community.

FOR local resident, Phume Ngongoma, standing idly by and not doing anything is not an option.

Ngongoma, who lives on Brookend Close in Sunningdale noticed that pavements on one of the main roads in the area was full of weeds growing in the pavement and leaves stuck in the gutters.

This prompted her to help clean up a small section of Sugarfarm Trail in order to help out and give back to her community.

“I think all the residents take pride in the area and they want to keep our little village, as we like to call it, neat and tidy. Various other residents had started their own initiatives and I felt that was such a wonderful idea. I regularly run in the area so I’d noticed the overgrown weeds and leaves on Sugarfarm Trail. One day after a run, I still felt I had energy to burn so I went home, grabbed a spade and started weeding. I also moved the leaves into large piles so they wouldn’t clog the storm water drains.

“It was not a large section of road but I immediately felt better about the area. It had been in my mind for so long and I felt the timing was perfect. I’ve seen a lone municipal worker cleaning the area and I feel the City cannot cope with all the suburbs. That is why I decided to help out and give back. There is definitely a sense of belonging and pride and we all want the area clean,” she said.

Ngongoma said she was encouraged by other residents who regularly help clean-up their areas.

“Every action helps. We all take pride in where we live and we often ensure our verges are tidy. I hope other residents will follow suit because we are stronger together,” she said.
