Eskom to host research and innovation camps

The Eskom Expo camps aim to provide emerging researchers with the resources they need to create award-winning ideas.

A NUMBER of research and innovation camps hosted by Eskom Expo have already taken place in the Free State, Mpumalanga, and the North West and now it is spreading to the rest of the country.

In March, a series of camps will be held in all nine provinces. District expos will begin in May, Regional expos will commence in July, and the swarm of activity will conclude at the Eskom Expo International Science Fair, which will proceed from October 4 to October 7.

While some research and innovation camps will take place in a single day, others will take place over the course of a weekend for students in Grades 4 to 12 and their teachers. Learners will begin their research at the camps in preparation for the District and Regional Expos.

The camps’ primary purpose is to help students with the ideation stage of their study. Learners will develop their research ideas into researchable subjects. Create a Research Plan, and evaluate potential ethical dilemmas through interactive ideation tasks.

Cecil Ramonotsi, CEO of the Eskom Development Foundation, explains,

“The primary aim of the Eskom Expo is to encourage our youth to get involved in science, technology, engineering, mathematics and innovation (STEMI), thus expanding the country’s skills base.”

The KZN central Expo will be held in Durban on July 26. For more information regarding the camp, contact the regional science fair director: Rekha Gopichand at: 082 920 4650 or E-mail: RGopichand@glenwoodprep.co.za.
