uMhlanga resident set to make a splash for conservation

Keira King plans to raise funds for Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation and its turtle rehabilitation.

THERE is no doubting uMhlanga resident, Keira King’s passion for ocean conservation.

As a member of the Umhlanga Rocks Surf Lifesaving Club, the 15-year-old sees on an almost daily basis the impact of plastic pollution on the oceans and on marine life.

This has prompted her to take up a fundraising 7.5km swim around Robben Island in April to raise funds for Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation, the non-profit, public benefit arm of the Two Oceans Aquarium.

Specifically the Grade 10 learner at Crawford College La Lucia wants to raise funds for turtle rehabilitation at the aquarium.

“Through my lifesaving training and my love for the ocean, I have noticed the impact of plastic pollution. I can’t even go for a swim or a paddle without bumping into something plastic. I know that one of the biggest threats to marine wildlife and specifically turtles, is plastic. Plastic bags, straws, netting and other items pose a threat to every species of turtle, including endangered ones. I’ve seen cases where turtles ingest plastic or get entangled in it and it breaks my heart.

“That’s why I wanted to do something to help save the turtles and do what I can to help. I will be swimming the 7.5km Robben Island swim in April this year to raise funds for turtle rehab at the Two Oceans Aquarium. My goal is to raise R50 000 this year and thus far I’ve raised more than R5 000 in a short amount of time which is incredible,” she said.
