Sea Cow Lake resident calls for speed humps after accidents

Modise Seemela said speed humps were allegedly approved by the eThekwini Municipality several years ago but had yet to be built.

A RESIDENT of Maynard Road has implored the eThekwini Traffic Authority (ETA) to look at implementing traffic calming measures to curb the speeding on the busy residential road in Sea Cow Lake.

This comes after a taxi crashed through his wall at the end of January causing approximately R40 000 worth of damage.

Modise Seemela, who owns the property, said this was the second time a vehicle had crashed through the outside wall.

What is more, he says speed humps on Maynard Road were allegedly approved by the eThekwini Municipality several years ago.

“There have been a number of near-misses. My neighbours fear reversing or leaving their driveways. Cars speed down Maynard Road on a daily basis and the speed limits are being flouted. Just a few hundred metres up the road from my property, two people died in a horrible accident in December last year. I’m extremely lucky that my vehicle, which is normally parked where the wall was knocked over, wasn’t there.

“I was at the mechanic when my wife called to inform me about the accident. I rushed home to find the outer wall completely destroyed. My grandchildren also play in the driveway sometimes and this could have been a tragic ending. It is heartbreaking because now I have an issue where my security is weakened. I’ve piled some of the bricks up to create some sort of a barrier but it is not enough,” he said.

Seemela believes the accident would have been easily available if the municipality had installed speed humps.

“I need the municipality to act now. There is a major problem here and we need these calming measures to stop any further accidents and fatalities,” he said.

Despite attempts, the eThekwini Municipality did not provide a comment at the time of publishing.
