Durban Solid Waste strike affects Durban North

"We will continue to monitor this situation and ensure that DSW does its core objective which is to keep the city clean," said DA eThekwini Deputy Caucus Leader Mzamo Billy.

SOME parts of Durban North have been affected by the Durban Solid Waste strike which started on Monday, February 14.

Ward 36 councillor, Shontel de Boer, said the strike started in other areas north of Durban, and that non-collection became an issue in Durban North on Tuesday morning.

“When I contacted the refuse department, I was told to advise residents to keep their bags in their properties until a resolution had been reached,” she said.

De Boer added that DSW staff and leaders had been in a meeting today to try and come to a resolution. “For now, I urge residents not to panic.

Hopefully, I will get some positive feedback by later this afternoon. Keep your bin bags in your property,” she said.

DA eThekwini Deputy Caucus Leader Mzamo Billy the strike was due to a labour dispute between the municipality and some DSW employees.

“We have received assurance that there is currently a meeting taking place between the city’s senior management and the representatives of the employees affected”.

“We call upon all stakeholders to work together to find a lasting solution to this problem which is now affecting service delivery in our city,” he added.
