Still no answers on Kenville bridge construction project says residents

Residents say the project to build the bridge has taken four years and is yet to be completed.

IN 2018 the eThekwini Municipality announced that Kenville Road would be closed (for a year) as work was being carried out to realign Inanda Road/Sea Cow Lake Road to ease traffic congestion.

A new bridge, connecting Kenville Road to Sea Cow Lake Road was also due to be built.

However, four years later, residents and affected stakeholders have expressed their frustrations over the time taken to complete the bridge and project which has ground to a halt.

Jesse Singh, chairman of the Kenville/Sea Cow Lake Ratepayers Association, said due to the closure of Kenville Road and the structural collapse of Kew Road, various roads in the area were now being affected by extra traffic.

“It has definitely put a strain on the network of roads within Kenville. These residential roads aren’t built for trucks and other people accessing the area in large volumes. Access is a major frustration. This project was supposed to be an upgrade for all residents. We’ve had very little information regarding when the project might be completed and it is frustrating,” Singh said.

Meanwhile, the eThekwini Municipality says a supply chain management process is underway to appoint a contractor to complete the bridge.

City spokesperson Msawakhe Mayisela said they had envisaged the project, which began in 2018, to have been completed within a year.

“Unfortunately, there were a number of unforeseen technical challenges that emerged during construction. A supply chain management process is underway to appoint a contractor to complete the original scope of works and thereby restore Kenville Road. The City notes the community’s frustrations and acknowledges that the matter merits urgent priority. We apologise and ask for further patience while working to resolve this matter.” he said.
