Petrol thief targets uMhlanga service station

The petrol thief fled the scene in a white Ford Ranger.

WHILE there was a slight decrease in the petrol price this month, a thief used the opportunity to steal fuel from an uMhlanga service station.

While the incident occurred last week, Durban North SAPS has urged petrol attendants and station owners to ensure drivers switch off their vehicles while they are filling up.

According to Captain Raymond Deokaran, the spokesperson for the police station, the most recent incident occurred on Jubilee Grove.

“The suspect, in this case, asked for his tank to be filled, which came to R1 500. When it came to paying, the driver sped off. However, the incident was captured on CCTV footage. This isn’t the first petrol theft incident and, over the course of last year, we recorded a number of cases where similar modus operandi were used,” he said.

Deokaran added that the details of the car’s make or registration were important in cases where no CCTV footage was available.

“It’s also important for staff to remember to always record the registration numbers of vehicles that fill up at the garage before customers are allowed to put fuel in their tanks,” he said.
