‘Petrol scammers’ target Durban North

Some locals have given the men cash while other say they chose to drive away.

TWO men, claiming to have run out of petrol, are allegedly conning Durban North residents out of hundreds of Rands.

Dawn Buxton, the administrator of the Durban North Residents Facebook group, posted a warning on the group after she spotted the men flagging cars down near Pick n Pay Hyper Durban North.

“The men claim that they have no petrol and need money to fill up and get back home to Amanzimtoti,” said Buxton.

When she saw them a few weeks ago, Buxton said they signaled for her to slow down, which she did.

“They then told me that they had broken down and needed money to get home.  They looked very suspicious so I drove off,” she said.

She posted a warning on the Facebook group, which several members comment on the issue. Some claimed to have encountered the men during their travels.

Candis Sudhu: I handed this guy money at Suncoast when he gave the same excuse. We saw him again at uShaka and my hubby totally lost it. He gets very arrogant and aggressive when you call him out.

Joan Orchard – Veenendaal: He caught me outside Riverside Spar. I still gave him R50.

Alison Chadwick: They are such con artists – I have seen them in Riverside Road doing exactly this! They run from car to car saying they’ve run out of petrol and ask for money.

Des Dawson: They have been around for a good few years.. (sic) even prior to Covid. Been seen in Toti to uMhlanga.
