Piles of litter picked up at Blue Lagoon clean-up

Residents and volunteers show their support for first clean-up of the year.

RESIDENTS and volunteers had their hands full on Saturday morning for the first #CleanBlueLagoon clean-up of the year.

Piles of plastic, polystyrene and other items had washed up on Beachwood Mangroves Beach after the recent rains in the province.

Hundreds of bags of rubbish were collected from the beach which borders the Umgeni River mouth.

Janet Simpkins, founder and director of non-profit organisation (NPO), Adopt-a-River, said she was pleased with all the extra hands to assist the clean-up.

“It wasn’t our highest turnout but every pair of hands help. The amount of litter picked up today is astounding. Since the beginning of the year, the ADreach Group Masakhe Media river rangers have been hard at work.

“They’ve already filled more than 50 Tufbags and hundreds of other bags of rubbish which is just astounding. Everyone has worked tirelessly and we made some headway especially with some of the bigger items washed onto the beach,” Simpkins said.
