Electricity department inundated with reports of faulty street lights in north Durban

In Ward 110 alone, more than 100 defective street lights have been reported to the eThekwini Municipality.

THE eThekwini Municipality said ‘vandalism and cable theft’ are at the heart of the street light outages in north Durban.

On Monday, the ward 110 councillor, Aamir Abdul, told Northglen News that faulty street lights are an ongoing issue in the area.

Some residents have undertaken street light audits to show how widespread the problem is.

The municipality’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, said the City is aware of the street light problem currently affecting various parts of the city, including areas north of Durban.

“We appreciate the residents’ initiative with the street light audits they have been conducting. All street lights reported will receive the necessary attention. However, the issue of vandalism and cable theft is still growing.

“This means that the City’s electricity department is being inundated with reports of faulty street lights and it might take time for all of these to be addressed. We ask that residents are patient,” Mayisela said.

He added that, in some instances, street lights are repaired only to be vandalised almost immediately.

“This is not unique to eThekwini as the entire country is facing the same problem.”
