Durban North triathlete hopes to make comeback at Commonwealth Games

The local triathlete is hoping to competing at the games in Birmingham this year.

AFTER an ankle injury ended Henri Schoeman’s race at last year’s Olympic Games in Japan in the men’s triathlon, the 29-year-old has set his sights on the upcoming Commonwealth Games.

This year the City of Birmingham in the UK plays host to the games and the event holds special significance for the Durban North triathlete.

Schoeman won gold 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and he hopes he is able to repeat that feat this year.

“I was disappointed with how the Olympics ended but I had been plagued by the ankle injury. Since then I’ve seen a few specialists and trained as much as I can without stressing the ankle. My hopes for 2022 is of course to represent South Africa and defend my title at the Commonwealth Games. I’m working towards recovery and getting stronger everyday,” he said.

On a personal level, Schoeman said he and wife, Franzel, were looking forward to welcoming a new addition to their family in the next two months.

“It really is an excited feeling being able to start a family, it wasn’t always smooth sailing in the beginning. We are going to have a baby girl and I know Franzel will make a wonderful mom. It’s hard to comprehend sometimes that we are going to have a baby in two months but I’m looking forward to parenthood,” he said.
