Holidaymakers dose up on uMhlanga’s vitamin ‘sea’

Safe swimming, a clean beach and the village are some of the things beachgoers say they love about uMhlanga.

UMHLANGA Beach is clearly the place to be this holiday as locals and tourists flocked the area to get their dose of vitamin ‘sea’.

Durban local, Moipone Manyaapelo said she needed to get out and enjoy the beauty of the ocean as her movements were limited due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“uMhlanga Beach is beautiful and clean all year round. I love it here,” she said.

Skyla van Beljan and her friends, Emma Schipolth and Gina Foster, said uMhlanga has been their choice of holiday destination for years.

“We come here every December. My family has a holiday home here. uMhlanga has such a great vibe. There is so much to do in the village,” said van Beljan.

Amahle Ntombela said there was no better way to spend a summer day than by lazing on a beach and eating ice-cream.

“I live in KwaMashu and my family and I often come to uMhlanga Beach. It’s beautiful here,” she said.

According to the eThekwini Municipality, nearly 200 000 visitors stayed in eThekwini between December 15 and January 4, which was most welcome after its tourism industry lost hundreds of millions in revenue due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The City’s accommodation establishments recorded occupancy rates of over 80%,” said mayor Mxolisi Kaunda.

He added that over the Christmas weekend alone, 200 000 tourists visited the city and spent close to R150m, which contributed approximately R350m to the city’s GDP.
