Durban SPCA urges owners to claim their pets

More than 300 animals were rescued by the SPCA over a 10-day period.

THE marketing manager for the Durban & Coast SPCA, Tanya Fleischer, has urged the north Durban community to reclaim their pets.

Between December 24 and January 2, the association saw more than 300 stray and unwanted cats, kittens, puppies and dogs being admitted.

“Of this, 20% of animals were surrendered as unwanted pets, with 80% being strays. Of the 80%, only 29 animals have been claimed by their owners. Others are still waiting for their owners or are waiting for new homes,” Fleischer said.

She urged residents to visit the association at its Springfield premises.

“We are also appealing to pet owners to ensure their pets are microchipped. This is the best and easiest way for them to get back to you in the event that they get lost. You can book with the SPCA to have your pets microchipped,” she said.

Fleischer added the SPCA’s inspectorate was kept busy over the New Year as it received 20 call outs.

“A total of 15 strays were collected. One dog was hit by a car while running away from fireworks. Our inspector was called to the scene and the owner asked for his dog to be humanely euthanised. One dog was stuck and rescued. Two cases are under investigation, one being an abandoned dog and another a neglected puppy,” she said.
