Durban North resident starts Christmas lights Facebook group

Gill Armour has started the Facebook group, Chasing the Christmas Lights, as a way to help families find the best places to see Christmas lights in Durban North and its surrounds.

WITH Christmas fast approaching, several homes, public parks and streets in the Durban CBD have switched on their Christmas lights to boost the holiday spirit in the city.

For Gill Armour, a Durban North resident, this presented an opportunity to create a Facebook group, Chasing the Christmas Lights, as a way to help families find the best places to see Christmas lights in Durban North and its surrounds.

“I actually started the page last year. I remember seeing so many comments on Durban North Neighbours and other Facebook groups asking, ‘Does anybody know where to find the best Christmas lights?’. An idea went off in my head and I thought ‘Why not start a page?’. That way, people could share where they’ve seen beautiful homes, businesses and public areas lit up.

One of the best places to see spectacular Christmas lights is the Trail of Lights at the Durban Botanical Gardens.

“We also happened to be in the midst of the second wave of Covid-19 infections and, for me, driving around to look at the lights was safer than gathering in large numbers. I’ve been quite chuffed by how the members have taken to the group. People are constantly sharing locations of Christmas lights and it’s a thrill to see. It also helps pinpoint places, so you don’t spend all night driving around looking for the lights,” Armour explained.

When asked what some of her favourite Christmas light sites were, Armour said she had three in particular.

“The Durban Botanic Gardens has the magical, outdoor Trail of Lights which is just a spectacularly visual treat for the eyes. It’s great for families too. In Durban North I would have to say Annie’s Busy Beez on Romsey Grove and Remax Glenashley on Newport Avenue. I would love to see the page grow and see more people share their photos. I encourage them to join and share the joy,” she said.
