14 years of improving uMhlanga Rocks’ public spaces

This year the uMhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP), established and funded by commercial property owners, turned 14. Its mandate is to create a safe, cared for environment that supports responsible business activity, enhances property values and creates enjoyable public spaces for everyone.

WHY A UIP?
By 2007 urban decay was threatening property values and business prosperity in uMhlanga Rocks. The UIP collaborated with eThekwini Municipality to combat the decline and deliver an exceptional experience of place. The result? A key economic node, with strong property values substantially contributing to the eThekwini Metropole GDP.

WHAT SERVICES DOES THE UIP PROVIDE TO UMHLANGA ROCKS’ PUBLIC SPACES?

  • A capacitated urban management team
  • Lobbying the city to optimise service delivery and motivate infrastructure repairs and investment
  • Supplementary security, cleaning, greening and maintenance services
  • Special improvement projects enhancing public space useability and aesthetics
  • 24-hour hotline for emergencies and municipal faults 086 111 2050
  • Responsive communications platforms including website, social media and email communications

WHAT ARE THE UIP’S BOUNDARIES?
Durban View Park to the uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve incorporating Lagoon Drive, Chartwell Drive and the uMhlanga Promenade.

ROCK-SOLID SERVICE DELIVERY
uMhlanga Rocks has consistently improved since the UIP’s inception enhanced by a significant investment increase and completion of key municipal and UIP-funded upgrades including the recent forest boardwalk and sewerage system. The inclusion of voluntary residential contributors boosted service delivery capacity.

Today the uMhlanga UIP continues to grow from strength to strength with a rock-solid service delivery approach and strong ties with the municipality and businesses in the area.
