Durban North teen continues to show appreciation for frontline workers

The Danville Park Girls' High School learner said she wanted to show appreciation for and thank frontline workers.

THROUGHOUT the Covid-19 pandemic, healthcare workers, emergency personnel and police officers have been at the forefront when it comes to risk of infection.

That has prompted Durban North resident, Cheyénne Pinn to give back with her ‘Superhero Care Packs’ she’s collected.

The Danville Park Girls’ High School learner, through donations and help from the local community, has put together hundreds of appreciation packs consisting of three items, a water (or energy drink), a coffee sachet and a chocolate or packet of biscuits.

Each care pack also has a message that reads ‘Thank you to our Superhero-Here’s something small to say a Big thank you.’

“I started the collection in December after a visit to a local doctor’s office. This was the start of our second wave and I could see the exhaustion of the staff dealing with patients. That is where the idea was born. Almost a year later we’ve given out around 700 appreciation packs. When I started I didn’t think I’d get to this point. With a fourth wave looming I will continue distributing the appreciation packs to all frontline workers. They’ve faced so many challenges during this pandemic and my aim is to make them feel appreciated and loved,” she said.

In the last month, Pinn has visited the Umhlanga Fire Station, where she distributed 20 appreciation packs to firemen and staff and various pharmacies and doctors’ offices in the area.

“The response from the community has also been fantastic and it’s through them that we’ve been able to distribute hundreds of appreciation packs. I wouldn’t have been able to transport and distribute all the items without the love and support of my family. My mom in particular has been incredible. I’ve used social media to get the word out about the collection and I’ve also partly funded the purchase of some of the items and I hope to continue with this outreach initiative through this year. Seeing some of the reactions and smiles of the health care workers has been heartwarming,” Pinn said
