Durban North vocalist jazzes things up for charity

Proceeds from the concert will go to CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa.

DURBAN North’s jazz vocalist, Natalie Rungan will hold her first public concert since the Covid-19 pandemic.

She will be joined by musicians Mark Royeppen on keyboard and backup vocals, with Bruce Baker on drums.

The concert will be held at Seabrooke Theatre on December 3 at 19:00 and proceeds will go to the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa.

“We will perform a combination of originals and some pop favourites. Mark, Bruce and I started this concert called Up Close and Personal (UCP) a few years back. We basically took pop songs and treated them in a jazz style,” said Rungan.

Rungan is also a teacher and mentor and has graced many stages and platforms with her beautiful voice. She launched her seventh album this year.

“We have missed performing to live audiences. Before Covid-19 restrictions on events, I hosted at least one public concert a quarter. The reason for this is so I didn’t lose touch with live audiences. Performing for corporates and festivals are very different from concerts that we host. Here we get to choose the type of music for the anticipated audience,” she said.

When it came to choosing a beneficiary for the concert, she said CHOC approached her and the timing was perfect as she was looking to partner with a cause.

“I believe in the cause and, at the time when I needed to choose a social cause I would partner with as an emerging artist, I was approached by CHOC. It was serendipitous because the timing for the invitation was so perfect and it was a cause I could see myself sticking with for life,” said Rungan.

The concert will feature some of Rungan’s originals such as Africa My Home and Spring.

“The audience can expect to have a good time. I want people to feel the love and encouragement I feel from my conviction to music. The UCP concept is all about the audience and how they relate to and react to the performances,” she said.

Rungan encourages those attending to bring a gift for a child and, in return, they will receive one of her recorded CDs.

Tickets cost R100. To book your spot, contact 079 072 5633 or email info@natalierungan.co.za
