Editor’s note: Let’s learn from justice warrior, Tamsyn Elaine Allison

Caxton editor shares her opinion about the16 Days of Activism.

From November 25 to December 10, South Africa will observe 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign (16 Days Campaign).

This is a United Nations campaign and, this year, the theme is The Year of Charlotte Mannya Maxeke – 16 Days of Activism – moving from awareness to accountability.

Every year our publications cover this and each year this scourge appears no better.

Over the years I have not only covered numerous stories on gender-based violence, I was also a victim of it. But it was anti- Gender-Based Violence (GBV) activist and Durban North resident, Tamsyn Elaine Allison who, in my view, had an enormous impact on highlighting the fight against gender-based violence.

Allison passed away on April 28 in 2020 in hospital due to post birth complications. I met her once but, when I heard the news, I was shattered.

She was a champion of the GBV cause and I met her at a gathering at the Durban City Hall in September 2019.

I had been following her on social media for years and her posts were always so empowering and kind.
We gathered on the steps of the Durban City Hall in the wake of the tragedy surrounding the slain UCT student, Uyinene Mrwetyana.

Women cried at the gathering and Tamsyn, with her militant yet warm and kind nature, hugged them fiercely.

Even though I only met her once, I miss her profoundly, more so now as we observe 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children. This should be us every day.
