Pink Ride held in uMhlanga to show support for breast cancer awareness

Bikers rode from uMhlanga to Blue Lagoon with their motorcycles embellished in pink.

THE roar of motorcycles, donned in pink with their drivers looking just as festive, filled uMhlanga on Saturday morning as Durban motorcycle clubs joined to support the PinkDrive.

About 25 bikers, who supported the Harley Pink Bike Ride, made their way from uMhlanga to Blue Lagoon and back.

The PinkDrive is a non-profit organisation that promotes awareness and early detection of, and screening for, gender-related cancers in South Africa, using the message that early detection will help to prolong life.

“We aren’t funded by government, so our funds come from the corporate sector, sponsors and events such as the Harley Pink Drive.

The money raised goes towards treatment for gender-based cancers. We are so grateful for their co-operation in this event,” said the KZN administrator for the PinkDrive, Janice Benecke.

Len Barnett, director of the Durban Free Chapter, who organised motorcycle clubs to get involved in the fundraiser, told the Northglen News that they were glad to have been able to assist with the fundraiser.

“Bikers from across Durban were invited and each one attending had to make a contribution to PinkDrive. We have lost a lot of our members to cancer, so this fundraiser is very close to our hearts,” said Barnett.

He added that a similar event will be held every October to support PinkDrive.

Paintings and a hamper were raffled and, together with the contributions from the bikers, R5 500 was raised.
