eMdloti car, peacock thieves slapped with fine

The suspects were charged with attempted theft of a motor vehicle, reckless driving, possession of car breaking implements and the theft of a peacock.

DURBAN North SAPS welcomed the sentence and fine handed down to two thieves, Njabulo Shandu and Sanele Zindela for their part in an attempted theft of a vehicle in eMdloti in October last year.

The spokesman for the station, Captain Raymond Deokaran said the suspects, who crashed their vehicle on Umhlanga Rocks Drive in a high-speed pursuit, were found in possession of a male peacock that was stolen from a Northdene home.

The suspects were also found in possession of car breaking implements.

“On the day of the incident, the suspects were spotted attempting to break into a vehicle in eMdloti. A high-speed chase ensued between Marshall Security and the suspects. The duo eventually lost control of the vehicle, a red Toyota Eitos, on Umhlanga Rocks Drive, where they capsized and rolled down a bank.

“When security and police opened the boot they were surprised to see a peacock (the accused were caught on camera stealing the bird earlier that morning) as well as a bucket containing various traditional medicines. Both Shandu and Zindela were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, as well as a fine of R5 000. In addition, they paid R10 000 into the Criminal Asset Recovery Fund (CARA),” he said.

Deokaran also congratulated the investigating officer, detective constable Nhlakanipho Ngcobo, for his work on the case.
