Security company shares tips to stay safe on election day

REGISTERED voters across South Africa will soon head to their closest voting station to make their mark in the 2021 municipal elections. With thousands of people leaving their homes unattended, ADT released a checklist to ensure Highway residents, and their possessions, are safe.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) reported that more than 23 000 voting stations will be open between 08:00 and 17:00 on Monday, November 1, while special votes will be cast on Saturday, October 30 and Sunday October 31.

The head of marketing and communications at Fidelity ADT, Charnel Hattingh shared a few tips to ensure that people exercise their right to vote in a safe and secure manner.

Hattingh advised  Durbanites to lock up when they leave their home. She also recommended voters leave any flashy jewellery, expensive electronic devices or assets at home.

“Remember to take your ID card or other documents that the IEC may require from you to cast your vote,” she said.

For people who will drive to the polling station, Hattingh advised them to remove their valuable items from the car.

“Motorists should make sure their car is securely locked before they walk away. The same kind of personal safety measures that you would remember when parking at a mall, or leaving your car parked outside in the street at night, are also applicable on voting day when you park outside the voting station.

“The public must also always keep an eye out for anyone who might possibly be following them and call for assistance from SAPS or their security company. It is always a good idea to keep contact numbers for local police or security companies on your phone,” advised Hattingh.

In addition, she said SAPS will be present at all voting stations.

“Even though the day has been declared a public holiday, the armed response officers will also be on duty to patrol streets and suburbs,” assured Hattingh.
