Community shocked by brutal murder of Parkhill woman (76)

The victim, whose name is known to Northglen News, was found tied up in the outbuilding of her home last night.

RESIDENTS of Parkhill expressed their shock and sadness over the brutal murder of a 76-year-old Athlone Road resident.

Melanie Fitzgerald, was found tied up in the outbuilding of her home on Thursday night. Paramedics declared her dead on scene.

Desiree Coetzer, Fitzgerald’s neighbour, said she can’t get the image of her friend’s body out of her mind.

“I’ve known Melanie for more than 15 years and we are all quite shocked by her murder. She was such a lovely person and extremely kind to all who knew her. My husband and her son helped look for her last night when they knew something was amiss as all of the lights of her home were switched off. They walked around the property with torches and looked through the windows of the home but I feared the worst,” she said.

“Her car was still in the driveway, so we knew she hadn’t gone anywhere. Her son spotted her body in the outbuilding and we immediately called for assistance. I will never get the image of her body out of my head for as long as I live. It was horrible to see her tied up like that. We are just devastated,” she said.

According to Coetzer, the keys to the home, and the vehicle on the property, were missing when Greenwood Park SAPS arrived on scene.

Bronwyn Samuels, founder of the Parkhill Neighbourhood Watch, also expressed her shock over the murder.

“We offer our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and we want them to know we are happy to support them with whatever they need,” Samuels said.
