La Lucia’s Tekahya to take on New York

"It was the first time I had ever auditioned for acting and I was surprised when I got a call back on the same day to say that I had succeeded,"

A 19-YEAR-OLD dancer, actor and model from La Lucia said she is ready for the red carpet and big screen after she was chosen to attend an audition in New York, scheduled for July 2022.

Tekayha Sukuram auditioned in The International ARTS Talent Showcase in October last year, the biggest showcase in Africa, where she was selected by international talent scouts to represent Africa at a global event in the United States of America. One of them was Rhavynn Drummer from Tyler Perry Studios.

“I have been dancing from the age of five and that comes naturally to me now. My dances are mainly Bollywood style but now I’ve learnt hip-hop, so I can perform a mixture of the two. I love acting and would love to pursue a career in this field,” beamed Sukuram.

Sukuram decided to audition after she came across an advert on Instagram that called for actors, singers, models and dancers to showcase their talent at The International ARTS Talent Showcase in Durban.

The second-year B.com accounting student made her way to the Blue Waters Hotel for an early morning audition where she showcased her skills.

“It was the first time I had ever auditioned for acting and I was surprised when I got a call back on the same day to say that I had succeeded,” she said.

Sukuram performed a one-minute monologue from the Hunger Games and a one-minute performance for dancing.

“I also won the best dancer award and received a special invitation to audition for a scholarship at the New York Film Academy. I was so thrilled to be going through to the national auditions in Johannesburg,” said Sukuram.

The pressure heightened for Sukuram at the nationals as international talent scouts were present.

“The performers had to go to Johannesburg, but the judges judged remotely due to Covid-19 restrictions. It was difficult to perform to the judges virtually,” she said.

Sukuram received a call from one of the representatives at 00.18 the next morning informing her that she had received a callback to go to New York for for The International Modeling and Talent Association (IMTA), is the largest talent and modeling convention in the world.

“I am thrilled once again and I know that this audition is going to be more pressurised than the last two.

There will be more than 300 agents available who can choose to sign you up,” she said.

The event takes place in July 2022.
