VIDEO: CCTV footage emerges of Gateway jewellery store robbery

Some of the armed robbers were dressed in traditional Middle Eastern garments.

DRAMATIC footage has emerged of the armed robbery at a jewellery store at Gateway Theatre of Shopping on Wednesday afternoon.

The CCTV footage has been widely shared on social media and shows two armed robbers, dressed in traditional Middle Eastern garments, enter Damjees Jewellers and draw their weapons. They are joined by more armed suspects. The group of suspects then ransack the store.

Captain Raymond Deokaran, spokesperson for the Durban North SAPS confirmed a case of business robbery has been opened and added a search is underway for the suspects.

“Several of the suspects were seen wearing Middle Eastern clothes as they stormed the jewellery store. The suspects made off with an undisclosed amount of items and escaped in two getaway vehicles. At this stage, no arrests have been made,” he said.

A security officer was shot when he confronted the suspects. He remains in a critical condition, Netcare 911 spokesperson, Shawn Herbst, confirmed.

Gateway Theatre of Shopping’s marketing manager, Michelle Shelley confirmed the robbery took place just after 14:20.

“Gateway security teams responded immediately to the scene. One of our security guards was injured and attended to by paramedics. The South African Police Services (SAPS) were notified and responded to the scene soon after. The perpetrators made off with an undisclosed amount of goods. The safety and security of customers and tenants is of utmost importance to us. We are working closely with SAPS to assist with their investigation. The centre has been secured and trading as normal,” she said.
