THE City has reminded residents and visitors that all beaches north of the uMngeni River up to Tongaat River remain closed.
The closure of the beaches follows the chemical spill that occurred during the unrest in July when a chemical warehouse in Cornubia was set alight.

eThekwini Municipality’s spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, has reminded the public to refrain from any beach activities until the water quality is deemed safe.
“All beaches north of the uMngeni River remain closed. Revised reports are expected this week which will then be sent for peer review process before a decision is taken whether to reopen the beaches. The public is asked to be patient and comply with requests from authorities to stop all swimming, surfing, fishing, harvesting of species, or any other activity that will enable contact with the water. Any inconvenience is regretted, however, the safety of the public is of the utmost importance,” Mayisela said.
