GALLERY: Coffee kiosk on uMhlanga boardwalk brought to life with mural

The boardwalk, which is now 161 metres in length, will be 1km long once completed and is made from recycled plastic.

CHILDREN from the Kinship Programme and artist Giffy Duminy have brought the uMhlanga Lagoon Nature Reserve’s old ablution facility to life with a colourful mural showing off some of the wildlife found in and around the reserve.

The facility is being converted into a coffee kiosk and has been incorporated into the raised boardwalk project.

The community-focused and funded project aims to enhance the area’s environmental integrity and provide a ‘walk-in-the-trees’ experience for locals and tourists to enjoy.

The raised, wheelchair-friendly boardwalk’s design will provide viewing decks overlooking the beach and lagoon and formalised access points from the boardwalk onto the beach.

Local resident, Michaela Geytenbeek who is part of the Kinship Programme said the children involved in helping paint the mural had a blast.

“All of the creatures featured on the coffee kiosk’s wall are found in and around the reserve. The programme facilitates immersive, inquiry-based and play-based learning in wild nature. This was an amazing experience for all the youngsters involved, they’ve loved the experience. Giffy was great as well showing them how he sets out his murals and they sat and watched him lay out the designs. When I asked them what their favourite thing they had done in that week they said the painting for sure. I think the coffee kiosk looks amazing and I can’t wait for people to experience the space once it is completed,” she said.
