Durban North resident calls time on historic hockey career

Cindy Hack ends her career as the most capped African indoor hockey player with 110 caps to her name and 108 goals.

DURBAN North resident and Protea hockey captain Cindy Hack has announced her retirement from international indoor hockey.

Hack ends her career as the most capped African indoor hockey player with 110 caps to her name and 108 goals.

Speaking to Northglen News about her retirement, Hack said she lived her career to the fullest and loved every moment of it.

“It has been an absolute honour, and an incredible accolade however to me it’s not about the number of caps but about the memories and moments that come with each and every single game that has shaped me into the player and person I am today. It is also about retiring and leaving a legacy, and inspiring many future indoor stars with belief, hope and a dream to play for the country as I did.

“I’m completely content as my heart is full of happiness as I know I have 150% lived every moment to the fullest during my career and just loved it. I think it all has to do with the space you are in with regards to announcing a retirement and it was the right time for me, and I was ready,” Hack said.

Hack said playing her 100th game was one of the standouts of her career.

“Without a question my 100th was an absolute stand out for me. Not only being the first South African to achieve 100 tests but the actual event, the entire day from the moment I woke up was just so special. I get goose bumps to this day when I think about it or talk about it. Walking out with the streamers, cheers, and screaming kids, my family and friends right there, holding the hands of my two little girls, looking at my team mates who had made a tunnel on the court was just indescribable.

“We were all so tearful and I was just so proud to be in this moment, sharing this occasion with all of them who have stood by me through it all- team mates, family, my girls, and many more. Then scoring on my 100th game was just a cherry on the top,” she said.
