Residents love new whale tail benches on uMhlanga pier

The whale tails, installed on both sides of the pier, act as benches and offer the perfect selfie spot or a place to rest while walking along the pier.

UMHLANGA’S Whalebone Pier is now even more iconic with the addition of two whale tail benches installed by the eThekwini Municipality.

The whale tails, installed on both sides of the pier, act as benches and offer the perfect selfie spot or a place to rest while walking along the pier.

uMhlanga resident and lifesaver, Nicola Badrodin, said she thinks the benches are quite symbolic because of the many whales that swim along the KZN coast.

“I love the look of them. I think they offer tourists and holidaymakers the perfect photo opportunity and are such a fun addition to the pier. Spacing and seating have always been an issue here and this is the perfect solution. I also think it’s symbolic for uMhlanga as there are quite a few whales and dolphin pods that swim past the pier,” she said.

Another local resident, Dave Stone described the new benches as ‘first-class’.

“They are terrific. I haven’t been down to the promenade for quite a while and I think it is such an excellent idea. They are really first-class and I hope to see more of them,” Stone said.
