Inspiring Women – Part 5: Womanhood is everything

“Having the privilege to lead the women of Soroptimist International Durban has also been an amazing highlight. As president, I feel very passionate about and the issues our club tackles. I am proud of the sisterhood that we have created within our club and the work we do,”

Jennene Naidu, president of Soroptimist International (SI) Durban, says she owes her love and passion for charity work to her mother, who she saw involved in numerous projects growing up.

Naidu’s journey with SI Durban started when she started following the club on social media. She was so impressed with the work being done that she had to get involved.

“SI Durban is a vibrant and dynamic organisation for the women of today. Our aim is to create opportunities to transform the lives of women and girls through various projects. We are also a part of a global network of members and volunteer movement.

“The club advocates for education, literacy, gender equality and human rights. Our membership work on grassroots projects that help women and girls achieve their individual and collective potential, realise aspirations and have an equal voice,” she added.

SI Durban has set up two fully functioning libraries in schools in Durban, developed a programme for young girls to realise their dreams beyond their high school years and recently undertook a fundraising drive to supply food hampers to those most in need after the unrest.

“Having the privilege to lead the women of Soroptimist International Durban has also been an amazing highlight. As president, I feel very passionate about and the issues our club tackles. I am proud of the sisterhood that we have created within our club and the work we do,” she said.

Naidu grew up in a loving home with two parents who championed hard work, respect and kindness.

“I count myself very lucky. My mother has served as a role model as she was also heavily involved in community and charity work throughout her life and from her I learned that sometimes even the smallest gesture of kindness can make a massive difference in someone’s life,” she said.

Speaking about her proudest achievements, Naidu said her undergraduate qualification in journalism and honours degree in culture, communication and media studies tops the list.

“I believe you are never too old to learn and just this year completed a certificate in digital marketing. I worked in corporate communications, but being a full time mom has been my most demanding role yet but definitely the most rewarding job I’ve ever had,” said Naidu.

During her down time, she loves trying out new experiences.

“It adds to my learning and takes me out of my comfort zone. I enjoy exercise and Pilates as well. My family and I also travel and explore new towns, cities, countries and cultures and I read extensively.”
