Kew Road residents fear for properties as collapse worsens

KENVILLE residents have voiced their concerns of a widening collapse on Kew Road and fear their properties may be at risk.

In April this year a section of the residential road collapsed and fault line cracks appeared along the middle of the road.

Months later, the road condition has worsened and the collapse has widened all the way to the pavement endangering pedestrians and potentially impacting residents’ driveways and homes.

Kew Road resident, Patrick Budhram, said despite the danger of the road collapsing even further, some drivers were using the thin strip of the pavement to get to the other side as a way of avoiding driving the long way around.

“Despite the road condition worsening and the collapse widening, I’ve witnessed drivers, who don’t want to turn back, drive on what’s left of the pavement. An additional piece of concrete has now been placed at the top of the road to prevent this as it is extremely dangerous. We all suspected the problem would get worse but the road is deteriorating so rapidly it may soon reach my immediate neighbour’s driveway, and then mine. The collapse is a few metres away from me. This could potentially trap us in our homes and if the collapse widens more, then our homes are at risk.

“Initially the collapse was only affecting one lane but as time has gone on both lanes have been affected. Now the pavement of the affected area may collapse soon. If you look closely the crack has reached stormwater drains which could also potentially be affected. We feel urgent intervention is required and a plan of action is needed to stop this from getting even worse,” Budhram said.
