Gateway to remain closed amid violent protests

Estimates are that the damage to private and public property is at approximately R100 million.

GATEWAY Theatre of Shopping will remain closed on Monday due to widespread looting and sporadic violence in and around Durban.

According to MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental, Ravi Pillay, conservative estimates are that the damage to private and public property is at approximately R100 million, however the information is still being collated.

A number of shops in and around north Durban were targeted on Sunday night with looting incidents reported at Springfield Park and Cornubia.

Various forms of protest action have taken place on major roads and highways allegedly by supporters of former president Jacob Zuma who was sentenced to 15 months in jail last week.

Marketing manager for Gateway, Michelle Shelley, urged shoppers to take note of the mall’s closure.

“Due to the protest action in KZN today, Gateway will not be trading. We apologise for any inconvenience. We’d also like to make you aware that there are a number of fake videos circulating on WhatsApp and social media which are not of Gateway,” she said.
