Danville Park undergoes transformation

The municipal grounds is used by both the football and cricket club and has served as VUFC's home ground for several years.

IN recent months there have been some major changes at Danville Park through a community led-project involving Virginia United Football Club (VUFC) and DHS Rhythm Cricket Club.

The municipal grounds is used by both the football and cricket club and has served as VUFC’s home ground for several years.

In working with the City and securing private funds, Glenn Allen, chairman of the VUFC explained some of the transformations at the grounds.

“If you visited the grounds during Covid-19 you would’ve seen the overgrown grass and the area around the changerooms targeted by thieves. We felt we needed to take ownership of the grounds by refurbishing it. There is a plan underway to secure the fenceline with a robust fence, replacing the old cement slab like walls which have either been damaged and targeted by graffiti taggers.

“We’ve refurbished and repainted the clubhouse and upgraded the men’s and women’s facilities at the park. We’ve also placed a water fountain in the middle between the two fields which could help to irrigate the far fields and provide runners, using the facility, with a drink of fresh water. We also installing an overflow bowl which dog walkers can make use of,” he said.

Allen added that funds have been generated between community members, VUFC and DHS Rhythm Cricket Club who also installed cricket nets at the field.

“This ground is used by everyone and we felt we needed to take ownership of the facilities for the betterment of the community. We’ve also renamed the main field the Les Crawford Field for a man who has been involved in club football (both playing and coaching). The feedback from the community so far has been great, it’s been extremely positive,” he said.
