Durban North’s ‘Deadpool’ spreads happiness

His love for Deadpool began many years ago, but when he put on a Deadpool costume on Halloween last year, he knew it was the start of something great.

‘LIFE is an endless series of trainwrecks with only brief, commercial-like breaks of happiness’, says Deadpool, Marvel Comic’s antihero. For many, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic came into existence, happiness has in fact been like a commercial break.

One of Deadpool’s biggest fans however, is a Durban North teenager who much like Deadpool, wants to make people laugh, so he dresses in full costume and roams the area over the weekend when he takes a break from studying.

Residents have spotted him and some have stopped for a selfie.

If you’re wondering who the man behind the mask is, you’re not going to get the information here, but he did speak to Northglen News about why he parades the streets in costume.

The 18-year-old, who is currently completing matric, says the Covid-19 pandemic has changed many lives and has left so many people stressed and filled with worry.

“When I put on my Deadpool suit, I do it to make people smile and to spread positivity,” said the teen who chooses to remain anonymous in true super (anti) hero style.

His love for Deadpool began many years ago, but when he put on a Deadpool costume on Halloween last year, he knew it was the start of something great.

“It was the perfect time to step out… Due to Covid-19, I wasn’t able to go to the malls as often as I did in the past so I put on my suit and walked around Durban North, getting some exercise at the same time.

” The costume has been created and sewn, by his grandmother who he praises for her sewing talent, while he handled the painting. “It took us five days to create the suit. There is still some work to be done, but we’ll get there.

The mask was purchased from Spain.

” The highlight for him is when children approach him, shocked and mesmerised that they have actually met Deadpool.

“Nothing makes me happier than seeing the expression on anyone’s face when they meet me, but with children it’s more special. That’s one of the reasons why I don’t want to give up my identity. I want the mystery so that children can enjoy the experience.”

So why did he choose to dress as Deadpool and not any other antihero or superhero?

“Deadpool portrays my personality. I am a loving, caring and funny person with a good vibe and I just want to spread cheer everywhere I go.”
