Durban North College principal aims to inspire blood donors

The La Lucia resident recently joined learners from the school and staff at a recent blood drive and said he hoped to inspire the learners at the school.

THIS month, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) kick-started its National Blood Donor Month with a special focus on honouring the dedicated donors who heeded the call to donate blood, while inspiring others to do the same.

One of those dedicated donors is principal of Durban North College, Alan Norton, who recently donated blood for the 72nd time.

“I think it’s good to encourage, especially from a young age, the idea of paying it forward for the community. For me that’s what a blood donation is. It only takes 10 minutes of your day and you could end up potentially saving three lives. I also donate blood to encourage others. We do have a few learners who were nervous about needles but once they’ve seen you go through it they realise it’s not as daunting as they thought it was.

“I was extremely fortunate to be able to donate for the 72nd time and I don’t have a goal in mind but rather to keep going for as long as I can. I’d also like to encourage others to donate at the blood donor centre in Kensington Square or at any mobile blood stations that they see as the SANBS needs all the help they can get,” he said.

Norton’s blood donation also took on added significance as the blood service commemorated World Blood Donor Day on Monday, 14 June.
