Child awareness day held at Malacca Road Informal Settlement

The Malacca Road Informal Settlement was a hub of activity over the weekend as the community and various stakeholders came together to commemorate Child Protection Week and to raise awareness of the rights of children.

TO mark the end of National Child Protection Week, Childline South Africa and local NPO, The Seed Fund brought various civil society organisations rendering child protection services together over the weekend.

The Malacca Road Informal Settlement was a hub of activity last weekend as the community and various stakeholders came together to commemorate Child Protection Week and to raise awareness of the rights of children.

Local resident and founder of The Seed Fund, Arianne Hayes-Hill, who works closely with the community of Malacca Road said she was blown away by the support of all those involved.

“This was such an amazing day of community collaboration. National Child Protection Week is commemorated annually and Childline and The Seed Fund had an idea to host an awareness day at the settlement to address the children and adults of the community. We had representatives from The South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA), the Family And Marriage Society of South Africa (FAMSA), Greenwood Park Police Station, Child Welfare South Africa and The Jes Foord Foundation who all spoke to the children about their rights.

“The key message from all the roleplayers was ensuring the most vulnerable in our society, our children, do not suffer abuse. Some of the organisations spoke to the community about how it is in our hands to stop the cycle of neglect, abuse, violence and exploitation of children. Protecting them from violence, exploitation and abuse is not only a basic value but also an obligation clearly set out in our Constitution,” she said.

Hayes-Hill said based on the success of the day she would love to roll out awareness programmes to various other communities in and around Durban.
