Walk to celebrate KZN coastline

The Philocaly Trail ('Philocaly' meaning The Love of Beauty) will see participants walk 84 kilometres along from Mtunzini to Sheffield Beach in five days (23 June to 27 June).

ORGANISER of The Philocaly Trail, Nikki Williamson is hoping to emulate the success of last year’s event along the KZN north coast which aims to raise awareness of the province’s pristine coastline while also addressing the threat the oceans are facing with plastic pollution.

The Philocaly Trail (‘Philocaly’ meaning The Love of Beauty) will see participants walk 84 kilometres along from Mtunzini to Sheffield Beach in five days (23 June to 27 June) while also raising funds for three organisations championing the environment, namely Adopt-a-River, Breathe Conservation and Wild Oceans.

Importantly participants can choose to walk on one or more of the days and since the inaugural event around R200 000 has been raised by those involved in the environmental walk.

Essenwood resident and organiser of the walk, Nikki Williamson, hopes to double the amount raised on the previous two walks.

“We’ve received such amazing support from residents across Durban and we are hoping for more of the same this year and we would love to double what we’ve raised over the past two years. For me the idea has always been to explore and appreciate the beauty of the KZN coastline. The charitable aspect grew out of the respect of someone who knows the incredible work the organisations we are supporting do. We’ve also decided this year that we would expand to do beach clean-ups separate to the walk in August and October. What is so great is that those participating can choose to walk on one or more of the days,” she said.
