Resident unhappy with Durban North Swimming Pool’s lengthy closure

Chris Pollard, who regularly used the pool said he can't understand why the public pool hasn't reopened for several months.

A GLENHILLS resident has expressed his unhappiness over the lengthy closure of the Durban North Swimming Pool.

Chris Pollard, who regularly used the pool, said he can’t understand why the public pool hasn’t reopened for several months.

“I’ve been told that this pool along with other municipal pools around Durban haven’t reopened yet due to a shortage of chlorine but how true that is I’m not sure. I think we all understood when the regulations prohibited swimming at public pools but those regulations are not at play at the moment as far as I’m aware. I’ve often used the Durban North Swimming Pool because it is so close to home and is convenient for me and my family,” he explained.

The 72-year-old added he was now travelling to uMhlanga or the Durban beachfront to swim in the ocean but said the experience was vastly different.

“Swimming in the ocean in your 70s is vastly different to when you were younger. My wife, who is also a regular swimmer, would rather swim at the pool. For me swimming is an integral part of my life and it is something I’ve passed down to my grandchildren, who I’ve taught to swim. This is what keeps me ‘fighting fit’ as they say. I would just like some answers about why the pool remains closed,” he said.

He added the main entrance to the pool was also overgrown with broken bottles and rubbish everywhere.

Ward councillor, Shontel de Boer, said she sympathised with Pollard’s frustration.

“I’ve been informed by staff they were ready to be opened but a shortage of chemicals had prevented them from operating at the time. I understand the frustrations of residents. I will be speaking to the management regarding the pool’s closure and when the pool may be reopened,” she said.
