Dog jumps from moving bakkie near Queen Nandi Drive

“When he arrived home, he was so traumatised and he appeared to be quite skinny. We have dogs of our own and we foster dogs as well so our knowledge on them is great," said Debbie Gillett.

A FUR mom and dad are looking for the owners of a dog who jumped out of a moving bakkie on the N2 near Queen Nandi Drive recently.

Speaking to Northglen News, Debbie Gillett said her fiancé, Edwin Chaning, was travelling on the slow lane, heading north, when he saw the dog escape from the bakkie which had no canopy on.

“The bakkie was travelling at about 120km/h and Edwin was doing about 80km/h. The dog ran into the bushes so Edwin stopped to see if he was all right,” said Gillett.

The dog managed to escape with no serious injuries besides a few scrapes under his chin which Gillett believes could be from hitting the tar when he jumped off.

“When he arrived home, he was so traumatised and he appeared to be quite skinny. We have dogs of our own and we foster dogs as well so our knowledge on them is great. He is definitely 90 per cent German Shepard with a cross of something else,” she said.

When Gillett tried to get him into her car a day later to take him to the vet to have him scanned for a microchip, he caged up and refused to get into the car.

“He definitely belongs to someone. Firstly, he was in the back of someone’s bakkie and he did have a leash on. I eventually went to the vet and got the scanner myself because he has been through such an ordeal. Unfortunately, he wasn’t chipped,” she said.

Gillet and Chaning are looking for the dog’s owners to come forward. Gillett has posted pictures of the dogs and their details on social media, but to date, nobody has claimed him.

“I hope we can reunite him with his owner soon. He has started warming up to us a bit but he does get nervous at times,” she added.

If this is your dog, please contact Chaning on 072 109 4225.
