Suspected Glenhills ‘brass number’ thieves nabbed

Multiple housebreaking implements and suspected stolen brass house numbers were found in the suspects' possession.

THREE men, two of whom are suspected to be the infamous ‘brass number thieves’ in Glenhills, were arrested in two separate incidents on Monday morning.

Marshall security officers first responded to a call from a member of the public at about 9.25am, after the informant noticed a man trying to break into a property on Orange Grove in the Park Hill area.

“While conducting a property search, our armed reaction officer found the suspect in the garage and immediately placed him under arrest,” said Tyron Powell of Marshall Security.

Information about the second incident, about two hours later, which sent security officers to Glenhills, came from an informant who said his neighbour had noticed trespassers on the property.

“Our emergency dispatch centre received a call at 11.05am and was given a detailed description of the suspects,” said Powell.

While officers were responding to the scene, they spotted two people who fitted the description given to them earlier, on uMhlanga Rocks Drive.

“Upon questioning the suspects, multiple housebreaking implements and suspected stolen brass house numbers were found in their possession,” said Powell.

He added that residents in the area had been complaining for about two months that their brass numbers were being stolen off their boundary walls.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t have a description of the suspects because homeowners would only discover on their way back home and nobody had actually seen it happen,” said Powell.

He said the men had a “bag full” of the brass numbers, which would be sold as scrap metal, as well as tools.

All suspects were arrested and handed over to the Greenwood Park Police for further investigation and processing.

Despite numerous attempts, comments from Greenwood Park SAPS could not be obtained.
