Resident bemoans state of Kenville roads

Yuvraajh Singh said his road was now one of the main points of entrance into the Sea Cow Lake and Kenville areas and that the road condition had worsened in the last few months.

A RESIDENT of Kenville has voiced his frustration over the ‘poor condition’ of roads in their area.

While many roads have been affected in different ways, the condition of one road in particular, Hendon Road, was cause for concern.

This comes after the collapse of a section of Kew Road, which has led to its closure, affecting alternate roads into the area.

Hendon Road resident, Yuvraajh Singh said his road was now one of the main points of entrance into the Sea Cow Lake and Kenville areas and that the road condition had worsened in the last few months.

“The project to complete the Kenville Road bridge ground to a halt more than a year ago and the easiest point of access for residents travelling in and out of the area had been Kew Road.”

“However since the road is now unusable due to a collapse more than a month ago, I’ve noticed other roads into the area taking a serious battering. On Hendon Road in particular, there are massive potholes which put not only motorists at risk but pedestrians too.

“A persistent water leak near the intersection of Rosary Road and Hendon Road has exacerbated the situation making the potholes even deeper. Some residents using this road aren’t aware of how deep the potholes are and as a result are at risk of damaging their vehicles. I have been in contact with the Sea Cow Lake/Kenville Ratepayers Association who’ve assured me the company working on the Kenville Road bridge would be restarting the project, however, there is no update on how long that project will take to complete.”

“The side roads like Hendon are now being used heavily and in my mind these roads aren’t built for this sort of traffic flow. The residents of Kenville and Sea Cow Lake can’t afford another road being completely destroyed,” he said.

Singh added that heavy duty trucks were also using Hendon Road which could further damage the surface of the road.

Ward councillor, Bobby Maharajh, said he understood the frustrations faced by the residents in the area.

“Various roads in and out of Kenville and Sea Cow Lake are in a terrible condition and the residents are understandably frustrated. Having two major routes into the area, Kenville Road and Kew Road not in operation is placing a severe strain on the adjoining roads. These roads while not up to standard are satisfactory up to a point. I do agree that as these side roads are accessed more frequently that it will place additional strain on the road network. I have been in contact with the City over the state of Hendon Road which is in need of urgent attention,” Maharajh said.
