Karthy to lead Sharks attack

Karthy Dludla who works at Our Lady of Fatima DSC was part of a number of South Africa's domestic and international women's rugby players who returned to the field over the weekend for the first time since 2019.

‘A DREAM come true’ was how Karthy Dludla described her appointment as the new Cell C Sharks women’s captain.

Dludla who works at Our Lady of Fatima DSC was part of a number of South Africa’s domestic and international women’s rugby players who returned to the field over the weekend for the first time since 2019.

The Women’s Premier Division kicked-off over the weekend with the Sharks women taking on the Eastern Province Queens and despite a 5-13 loss, Dludla said there were plenty of positives to take from the game.

“It was great to be out on the field playing again after such a long time away from contact sports. To think the last time we played a competitive game was 2019 so understandably it’ll take time for us to get up to speed with the game. It’s a massive honour to be named the captain of the team and a dream come true for me. It really shows me that the management and the coach trust me in this leadership role,” she said.

Dludla, who plays lock, has been part of the Sharks women’s team for the past decade. She added she will be using all of that experience in leading the team with passion and pride.

“It was a disappointing start to the competition but as one of a few senior players in the team I know I can draw on my experience and call on the senior players around me to inspire the team. Western Province and Border are the strongest teams in the premier division but my goal is to help reach the top three of the competition. I think we have the squad depth, the know-how and the determination to break into the upper half of the division. I’m really looking forward to the season ahead and lead the team with passion and pride,” she said.
